Travel Thoughts: Hotels
I was traveling for work this week (for my real job, which is not blogging) and, as I was showering in the first of two hotels on my itinerary, I got to thinking about what really makes or breaks a hotel. Yes, this post is a shower thought and I am detouring from our FL Keys Epic Beach Crawl to share it with you! Although Justin and I are still young in our travels, we've stayed in our fair share of hotels. The number one thing that, for us, makes or breaks a hotel is:
The bathroom. To be more specific,
What kind of showerhead? Is it a fancy shape, like a square? Does it have multiple spray settings? Does it have good water pressure? Does it heat up quickly and have a temperature comfortably between lukewarm and scalding that doesn't randomly fluctuate and lasts longer than it takes my fingers to start pruning? Some of these things can't be checked before you book, but you should be able to rustle up a picture to get the gist and make a close enough assumption.
I can reflect on all the nights I've spent away from home and recall both the best and worst showers I've ever taken. The ones that were the perfect, hot, luxurious end to a rough or long or spectacular day that I emerged from utterly relaxed and refreshed. The ones that helped wake me up and set the tone for the day ahead no matter how early. And the ones that never warmed up but I couldn't get away with not showering. The one that randomly scalded Justin, who I laughed at until a few minutes later when it randomly scalded me! The one that met all shower head requirements, but cut both showers short because the glass door leaked and flooded the bathroom. The first shower on a cruise ship where keeping our balance was more important than anything else.
And also, the countertop.
Granite, solid stone, or stone-like. Anything else, and you are counting on dollars saved over quality.
You might be thinking seriously?! Just these two things? Absolutely. The short list answers almost every question about the long list:
Other factors for those of you who won't let me live it down if I don't at least list them:
Bonus, what makes a hotel spectacular in our book?
Every hotel - and even our apartment - that I have ever walked into and said "wow" almost always started with the view. And those savvy hoteliers leave the windows open to make sure it hits you, too! We've stayed at a resort where there was a cockroach that briefly terrorized us in the beautiful bathroom with decent shower and granite counters and it ended up as a funny story in an otherwise fantastic stay...because of the view!
So to end this little diversion and return to our stories, here are some of the best views we've ever had. And before your jealously of this awesomeness makes you shun our blog, you can relish in our story when we once stayed in a Penthouse Suite with 2 living rooms, 2 bathrooms, and a wrap-around balcony, only to turn around the next night and find ourselves sleeping in separate double beds in a regular old budget dive. Oh, how far we fell!
